We have all been told the opposite of this, but by choosing sugar-free candies; such as lollipops or mints you are not hurting your teeth. In fact, you may be helping them, especially if the candy chosen is sweetened with xylitol. Xylitol can help fight cavities and prevent tooth decay.

A recent study observed 68 people ages 12 to 15, and the authors viewed the plaque’s pH in their mouths before and after they ate cheese. After 30 minutes their pH level was higher than 5.5. A pH level less than 5.5 puts a person at risk for damaged enamel. The higher pH level, the lower the risk is of developing cavities.

Sip Through a Straw

Obviously, soda and other artificially sweetened beverages are not a great idea for protecting your chompers, but the use of a straw can help. Straws help minimize damage by allowing less direct contact with your teeth.

Red wine has always been thought as being bad for teeth because of the stains it can produce. However, a recent study suggests this may be a misnomer. Individual chemical components in both red and white wine can combat bacteria found on your teeth and gums. These drinks should still not be consumed in excess; this will result in a counter effect on dental health.

Many insurance companies cover the cost of sealants applied by dentists. Sealants can help prevent teeth decay for up to 10 years, they must be routinely checked for chipping and wear throughout this time span. Children and teenagers are obvious candidates for sealants. However, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from sealants.
