Local History

Holladay, Utah, holds the distinguished title of being the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the state, a testament to its rich history and enduring community spirit. This area’s roots trace back to July 29, 1847, when a group of Mormon pioneers from the Mississippi Company, led by John Holladay of Alabama, ventured into the Salt Lake Valley. Upon discovering a vibrant, spring-fed stream near what is now Kentucky Avenue, they established the first village outside Salt Lake City, initially surviving the winter in rudimentary dugouts along the stream.

This settlement, initially attracted by its natural springs, ponds, lush grasses, and wildflowers, quickly became a hub for families looking to build homes and cultivate the land. When John Holladay was appointed as the branch president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the village adopted the name Holladay’s Settlement, in honor of its influential leader, whose family had a storied history dating back to the early 18th century in Virginia, with ties to significant figures in American history.

John Holladay’s journey to Utah was marked by resilience and faith. Before his conversion to Mormonism, he and his family had settled in Alabama, where he eventually led a group of converts as part of the Mississippi Company. Despite challenges, including a winter in Pueblo, Colorado, without meeting the main LDS party as planned, Holladay and his group persevered, contributing to the establishment of what would become a thriving community.

This enduring settlement of Holladay, named after a man with deep roots in American history and a pioneering spirit, represents not only the physical journey of its settlers but also their unwavering commitment to building a community that has stood the test of time, even when Salt Lake City itself was temporarily abandoned in 1857 during the occupation by Johnston’s Army.
